Pekahiah was king of Israel who reigned only two years before being assassinated. Son of Menahem, he succeeded his father but continued the northern kingdom's pattern of evil in Yahweh's sight. His captain Pekah son of Remaliah conspired against him and killed him in the citadel of Samaria, along with Argob and Arieh, aided by fifty Gileadites. His brief, troubled reign (around 740-738 BC) exemplifies the instability and violence that characterized Israel's final decades before Assyrian conquest. The name means 'Yahweh has opened (the eyes),' though his reign showed no spiritual insight.
