Escape or deliverance from danger; the surviving remnant of people or things that escaped destruction.
At the intersection of catastrophe and hope stands this feminine noun, naming both the act of escaping and those who have escaped. When Jacob divides his camp fearing Esau, he plans for a peletah -- a way of escape for the surviving group (Gen 32:8). When Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, he declares that God sent him ahead to preserve a peletah -- a deliverance (Gen 45:7). The prophets adopted it as a theological term for the faithful remnant that survives divine judgment, especially the survivors of Jerusalem's fall (Ezra 9:8, 13-15). Arabic najah (deliverance) and Swahili wokovu (salvation) illuminate the abstract sense, while the concrete sense of surviving people emerges clearly in translations across languages.
Senses
1. remnant or survivors — The concrete group of survivors or remnant that has escaped destruction, judgment, or catastrophe -- the people or things left standing after devastation. Used of survivors from locusts (Exod 10:5), from military defeat (Judg 21:17), and most prominently of Judah's remnant after the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles (2 Kgs 19:30-31; Ezra 9:8). French reste and German Entkommener capture this collective survivor sense. 18×

2. escape or deliverance — The abstract act or means of deliverance from peril, focusing on the escape itself rather than those who escaped. Jacob's planning for peleitah against Esau (Gen 32:8) and Joseph's theological reading of his own journey as God providing escape (Gen 45:7) exemplify this sense. Arabic najah, Korean piham (escape-act), and Swahili wokovu (salvation) all confirm the abstract-deliverance reading distinct from the concrete remnant. 10×
