Pelaiah: a descendant of David in the post-exilic period
Pelaiah appears in 1 Chronicles 3:24 in the genealogy of David's royal line, several generations after the exile. Though the Davidic throne no longer existed in political terms, these genealogies preserved the royal lineage, maintaining hope in God's covenant promises to David. Each name represented continuity—the line of promise hadn't died out. For post-exilic Jews, knowing who descended from David mattered both for immediate legal questions and for eschatological hope: one day, a son of David would restore the kingdom.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A personal name in 1 Chronicles 3:24, identifying a descendant of David several generations after the Babylonian exile. Pelaiah's inclusion in the royal genealogy served to document the continuation of David's line even when no king sat on the throne. These post-exilic records maintained the connection to God's covenant with David, preserving both legal lineage and messianic hope that eventually a son of David would restore the kingdom. 1×
