Athaliah — queen mother of Judah who usurped the throne for six years; also the name of two post-exilic men.
Primarily the name of the notorious queen mother who seized Judah's throne after her son Ahaziah was killed by Jehu. A daughter (or granddaughter) of Omri and Ahab, she brought Baal worship into the southern kingdom and attempted to exterminate the Davidic line — only the infant Joash survived, hidden in the temple for six years (2 Kings 11:1-3). Her dramatic overthrow by the priest Jehoiada (2 Kings 11:13-20) restored both the Davidic monarchy and Yahwistic worship. The name also appears for a Benjaminite (1 Chronicles 8:26) and two post-exilic figures (Ezra 8:7; 10:28). The Greek rendering Gotholia preserves the name across the Septuagint tradition.

Senses
1. Athaliah (personal name) The proper name Athaliah, referring primarily to the queen mother of Judah — daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (or granddaughter of Omri) — who usurped the throne after Ahaziah's death and reigned six years until overthrown by Jehoiada the priest (2 Kgs 11:1-20; 2 Chr 22-23). She is the only woman to rule Judah, and 2 Chronicles 24:7 calls her 'that wicked woman.' The name also designates a Benjaminite in 1 Chronicles 8:26 and two post-exilic men in Ezra 8:7 and 10:28. French 'Athalie,' Spanish 'Atalía,' and German 'Atalja' all reflect the LXX tradition of Gotholia. 17×
