Ekron -- northernmost of the five principal Philistine cities, seat of the god Baal-zebub
One of the five chief cities of the Philistine pentapolis, situated in the northern Shephelah near the border of Judah and Dan. Ekron features in the Ark narrative when the captured Ark was sent there, prompting a plague that convinced the Philistines to return it (1 Sam 5:10). It is also known as the seat of Baal-zebub, the deity King Ahaziah consulted before Elijah's rebuke (2 Kgs 1:2-16). The prophets pronounce judgment on Ekron alongside the other Philistine cities (Amos 1:8; Zeph 2:4; Zech 9:5, 7). Modern identification places it at Tel Miqne, confirmed by a royal dedication inscription found there.

Senses
1. Ekron (Philistine city) The place name Ekron (Hebrew eqron), identifying the northernmost city of the Philistine pentapolis in the Shephelah. Appears in territorial allotments (Josh 13:3; 15:11, 45-46; 19:43), the Ark narrative (1 Sam 5:10; 6:16-17), the Baal-zebub episode (2 Kgs 1:2-16), and prophetic oracles of judgment (Amos 1:8; Zeph 2:4; Zech 9:5, 7). Assyrian records call it Amqarruna. Translations preserve the name with slight variation -- Spanish Ecron, French and German Ekron. 22×
