Perezoso, holgazán; quien evita el trabajo y padece escasez, figura arquetípica en la enseñanza sapiencial de Proverbios.
Adjetivo usado como sustantivo para designar a la persona habitualmente perezosa. El ʿatsel aparece exclusivamente en Proverbios como uno de los personajes tipo favoritos de los sabios. El sermón de la hormiga en Proverbios 6:6–9 se dirige al perezoso directamente: «Ve a la hormiga, oh perezoso; mira sus caminos y sé sabio», estableciendo un contraste entre la laboriosidad de la naturaleza y la indolencia humana que resuena a lo largo del libro. El camino del perezoso está cubierto de espinos (15:19), sus deseos quedan insatisfechos (13:4; 21:25–26) y resulta tan irritante como vinagre a los dientes y humo a los ojos para quien confía en él (10:26).
