Ophrah, a place name for towns in Manasseh (Gideon's home) and Benjamin.
A masculine proper noun designating at least two Israelite towns. The most prominent Ophrah is Gideon's hometown in the territory of Manasseh, where the angel of the LORD appeared to him under the oak (Judg 6:11), where he built an altar called 'The LORD is Peace' (Judg 6:24), and where he was later buried (Judg 8:32). Tragically, it was also the site where Gideon erected the ephod that became a snare to Israel (Judg 8:27). A second Ophrah in Benjamin is listed among that tribe's allotted towns (Josh 18:23) and appears in narratives of the Philistine wars (1 Sam 13:17). The name may derive from a root meaning 'dust' or 'fawn.' Translations uniformly transliterate it: English 'Ophrah,' Spanish 'Ofra,' German 'Ofrah.'
Senses
1. Ophrah (place name, city in Israel) — A proper noun designating Israelite towns, primarily Gideon's hometown in Manasseh and a Benjaminite settlement. The Manassite Ophrah is the dramatic setting for Gideon's call narrative -- the theophany at the oak (Judg 6:11), the altar of peace (Judg 6:24), and the problematic ephod (Judg 8:27) -- as well as his burial site (Judg 8:32). The Benjaminite Ophrah appears in Joshua's allotment list (Josh 18:23) and in accounts of Philistine raiding parties (1 Sam 13:17). Consistent transliteration across languages -- English 'Ophrah,' Spanish 'Ofra,' French 'Ophra' -- reflects the stable transmission of this toponym. 8×
