Omri — personal name borne by four Israelites, most notably the sixth king of the northern kingdom
A Hebrew proper name meaning possibly 'my sheaf' or 'pupil of Yah.' Most prominently, Omri was the powerful king of Israel who founded Samaria as his new capital (1 Kgs 16:16–28). So lasting was his dynasty's reputation that Assyrian records continued to call Israel 'the house of Omri' (Bit-Humri) long after his line had ended. The Moabite Stone likewise names him. Three other men bear this name: a Benjaminite (1 Chr 7:8), a Judahite (9:4), and a chief of Issachar under David (27:18).

Senses
1. Omri The proper name Omri, applied to four distinct individuals. The most prominent is King Omri of Israel, army commander acclaimed king by the troops at Gibbethon, who reigned from Tirzah and then built Samaria (1 Kgs 16:16–28). Assyrian cuneiform (Humri) and the Mesha Stele attest his international significance. Three lesser figures in Chronicles also bear the name. 18×
