Cognado arameo del hebreo עַיִן, este sustantivo designa el ojo como órgano físico y como símbolo de percepción y vigilancia. En Esdras 5:5 se refiere al ojo de Dios que vela sobre los ancianos judíos, impidiendo toda interferencia con la reconstrucción del templo. En Daniel describe los inquietantes ojos humanos del cuerno pequeño (7:8, 20) y la restauración de la razón de Nabucodonosor cuando alza sus ojos al cielo (4:34). El término abarca así tanto la visión literal como la supervisión divina.
