Elam (place name; ancient kingdom east of Mesopotamia, frequent prophetic target)
Elam was an ancient kingdom located east of Mesopotamia, in what is now southwestern Iran. As a significant ancient Near Eastern power, Elam appears frequently in Scripture both historically and prophetically. The Elamites descended from Shem according to the Table of Nations. Elam allied with various Mesopotamian powers and occasionally threatened Israel and Judah. Prophets pronounced judgment on Elam, including Jeremiah's oracle of destruction in chapter 49, where God promises to scatter the Elamites to the four winds and break their military might. Despite these judgments, God also promised eventual restoration. Elamites appear at Pentecost in Acts, showing the fulfillment of restoration promises. The name became synonymous with a distant, powerful foreign nation.
