Ijon/Iyon; a city in Naphtali repeatedly conquered during Israel's divided kingdom period
Ijon was a strategic city in northern Naphtali that suffered repeated invasions during the divided kingdom era. Ben-hadad of Syria struck it during his alliance with Asa of Judah against Baasha of Israel. Decades later, Tiglath-pileser III of Assyria conquered it during his campaign against Pekah, deporting its inhabitants. The city's location on the plateau of Merj Iyun, between two tributaries of the upper Jordan, made it strategically valuable but vulnerable. Scholars identify it with Tell Dibbin, though the precise location remains debated. The repeated conquests illustrate northern Israel's exposure to foreign powers.

Senses
1. sense 1 Three occurrences, all in historical narratives of foreign invasions. The multilingual evidence shows transliteration of the place name with minor spelling variations (Ijon/Iyon/Iyyon). The city appears in the Books of Kings and Chronicles as a victim of geopolitical maneuvering—first Syrian, then Assyrian aggression. The parallel accounts in Kings and Chronicles show textual consistency in preserving this northern city's tragic history. Its strategic location made it a perpetual target in ancient Near Eastern power struggles.
