To wrap or envelop oneself in a garment; to cover another (transitive); causatively, to clothe or blanket.
The verb atah evokes wrapping a garment around the body — pulling a mantle over the face, draping a cloak, or covering the head in mourning. In the Qal reflexive, Samuel's ghost ascends 'wrapped in a robe' (1 Sam 28:14), and God 'wraps himself with light as a garment' (Ps 104:2). The transitive Qal extends to covering others: lepers must cover their upper lip (Lev 13:45). Spanish distinguishes the reflexive se cubre from the transitive cubrirás, and French envelopper captures the core image. The Hifil intensifies the agency, depicting God covering someone with shame (Ps 89:45).
Senses
1. Qal: wrap/envelop oneself — Qal reflexive: to wrap or envelop oneself in a garment or covering. Samuel's shade rises 'wrapped in a robe' (1 Sam 28:14), enemies are cursed to be 'wrapped in shame as a mantle' (Ps 109:29), and God 'wraps himself with light' (Ps 104:2). Spanish envuelto/se cubre and French s'envelopper preserve the reflexive wrapping image. 9×

2. Qal: cover, enwrap (transitive) — Qal transitive: to cover or enwrap someone else. The leper 'shall cover his upper lip' (Lev 13:45), Ezekiel is told not to 'cover your lip' in mourning (Ezek 24:17), and Israel's leaders 'shall cover their lips' in shame (Mic 3:7). Spanish cubrirás and French couvrir employ straightforward transitive covering verbs. 4×

3. Hifil: cover, clothe (causative) — Hifil causative: to cause to be covered or clothed, with God or a powerful agent as the one covering. In Psalm 84:6 the early rain 'covers' the land, and in Psalm 89:45 God has 'covered him with shame.' Spanish cubriste and French envelopper confirm the causative force, where covering becomes an imposed act of divine judgment or blessing. 2×
