Ezra -- the priestly scribe who led post-exilic return and restored Torah observance in Jerusalem
A priest and scribe descended from Aaron through Seraiah, who led a second wave of returnees from Babylon to Jerusalem under Artaxerxes (Ezra 7:1-10). Called both 'the scribe' (hassofer) and 'the priest,' Ezra embodied the convergence of priestly authority and scribal expertise that shaped Second Temple Judaism. He publicly read the Torah to the assembled people (Neh 8), led national confession and covenant renewal, and addressed the crisis of intermarriage (Ezra 9-10). The name also designates a priest who returned with Zerubbabel (Neh 12:1, 13) and a participant in the wall dedication procession (Neh 12:33).
