Iddo — prophet and chronicler; also several other OT figures bearing this name
The name עִדּוֹ (Iddo) belongs to several Old Testament figures, most prominently a prophet-chronicler whose writings are cited as sources for the reigns of Solomon, Rehoboam, and Abijah (2 Chr 9:29; 12:15; 13:22). This prophetic Iddo composed 'visions' (חֲזוֹת) concerning Jeroboam and is called a 'seer' (חֹזֶה). The same or a related Iddo appears as the grandfather of the prophet Zechariah (Zech 1:1, 7; Ezra 5:1; 6:14). Other bearers include a district governor under Solomon (1 Kgs 4:14), a Levite descended from Gershom (1 Chr 6:21), and a priestly leader among the returning exiles (Neh 12:4, 16).
Senses
1. Iddo (personal name) — A prophet and chronicler whose works — 'the visions of Iddo the seer' and 'the midrash of the prophet Iddo' — served as historical sources for the Chronicler's account of Solomon, Rehoboam, and Abijah (2 Chr 9:29; 12:15; 13:22). Likely the same figure as the grandfather of the prophet Zechariah (Zech 1:1, 7; Ezra 5:1; 6:14). Additional persons named Iddo include a Solomonic governor (1 Kgs 4:14), a Gershonite Levite (1 Chr 6:21), and a priestly family head in the post-exilic community (Neh 12:4, 16). Spanish 'Iddo' and English 'Iddo' preserve the Hebrew form unchanged. 11×
