shelter, protection (from danger)
A rare feminine noun meaning shelter or protection, used ironically in Moses' song where he mocks the false gods of Israel's enemies. 'Let them be a shelter over you,' he says sarcastically, challenging these lifeless idols to provide the safety their worshipers expect. The term normally connotes refuge, but here it drips with scorn.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The 'shelter' that impotent pagan gods cannot provide, appearing in Deuteronomy 32:38 in Moses' satirical challenge. After describing how Israel's enemies trusted in gods who ate their sacrifices and drank their drink offerings, Moses taunts: 'Let them arise and help you, let them be your shelter!' The Hebrew construction may require emending the verb to plural (as some suggest) to match the plural subject. 1×
