Sargon—Assyrian king, conqueror of Samaria
Sargon II ruled Assyria from 722–705 BC and completed the conquest of Samaria begun by his predecessor. Though mentioned only once in the Bible, Assyrian records extensively document his reign and military campaigns. His name means 'the king is legitimate' or 'firm/true king,' possibly reflecting political circumstances of his accession. Isaiah mentions him in connection with the siege of Ashdod, demonstrating Assyrian power extending into Philistine territory. He was father of the famous Sennacherib.

Senses
1. sense 1 Personal name of Assyrian king Sargon II (reigned 722–705 BC), mentioned in Isaiah 20:1. Though appearing only once biblically, he was historically significant as Samaria's final conqueror and father of Sennacherib. His Akkadian name Šarru-kēnu means 'the king is legitimate.' Septuagint variants show textual confusion with later recognition of the name's importance from Assyrian inscriptions.
