1. tempest, storm, whirlwind — A violent windstorm, tempest, or whirlwind, often associated with divine judgment or theophany. In Jer 23:19 and 25:32 a 'whirling tempest' (סַעַר מִתְחוֹלֵל) goes forth as YHWH's wrath upon the wicked; in Jer 30:23 the 'storm' (סַעַר) of the LORD continues whirling. In Jonah 1:4,12 the great storm (הַסַּעַר / סַעַר) threatens to destroy the ship. Ps 55:8 speaks of fleeing 'from tempest' (מִסָּעַר); Ps 83:15 invokes God to pursue enemies 'with your tempest' (בְּסַעֲרֶךָ); Nah 1:3 describes YHWH's way 'in storm' (בְּסַעַר). Arabic consistently uses عَاصِفَة (storm); Korean uses 폭풍 (storm); Hindi uses आँधी/तूफ़ान/बवंडर (whirlwind/storm/tornado); Spanish alternates between tempestad and tormenta; German uses Sturm. All prepositional variations (מִן, בְּ, with suffix) represent the same meteorological/theological sense. 8×
