Samgar-Nebo appears in Jeremiah 39:3 in a list of Babylonian officials who entered Jerusalem after its fall. However, the text is almost certainly corrupt at this point. Most scholars believe 'Samgar' is a dittography (accidental repetition) of part of the preceding title 'Rab-mag,' and that 'Nebo' should be joined to the following name to read 'Nebushazban,' an officer known from verse 13. The Septuagint's confused rendering supports the view that the text was already problematic in antiquity. If the traditional text is retained, it would represent an otherwise unknown Babylonian official with a name incorporating 'Nebo,' the name of a Babylonian god.
