Booth, temporary shelter of branches; the Feast of Booths (Sukkot); God's protective canopy; a thicket or covert
A sukkah is a temporary structure woven from branches and foliage, used as shelter for people, livestock, or soldiers in the field. In its most familiar usage it names the joyful pilgrimage Feast of Booths (Sukkot), when Israel dwells in leafy shelters to remember the wilderness sojourn. Poetically, God's own dwelling is pictured as a sukkah -- a canopy of dark clouds or a pavilion of protection (Ps 18:11). The word can also denote a natural thicket where a lion lies in ambush (Job 38:40), preserving the concrete image of interwoven vegetation that underlies every sense.
4. thicket, covert The word's most concrete, natural sense: a dense thicket of vegetation serving as an animal's hiding place. Job 38:40 uses it for the covert where a lion crouches in ambush. This sense preserves the root image of interwoven branches without any human construction, linking directly to the etymological core of the word.

Senses
1. booth, temporary shelter The primary physical sense: a rough, temporary shelter made of interwoven boughs and foliage. Genesis 33:17 shows Jacob building booths for his cattle at the place he names Sukkot, while Leviticus 23:42 prescribes dwelling in such shelters during the festival. Multilingual glosses (Spanish 'cabañas,' German 'Laubhütten,' English 'booth') all capture the rustic, impermanent quality of the structure. 18×

2. Feast of Booths (Sukkot) When preceded by the article ('the Booths'), the word functions as the proper name of the autumn pilgrimage festival -- Sukkot or Tabernacles. Leviticus 23:34 and Deuteronomy 16:13 anchor this liturgical sense. French and German translations sometimes retain the Hebrew loan ('le-Booths,' 'der-Booths'), reflecting the festival's status as a recognized proper name across traditions.

3. pavilion or canopy of God A metaphorical extension portraying God's presence as a sheltering canopy or pavilion. In Psalm 18:11 (paralleled in 2 Samuel 22:12), the Lord wraps Himself in dark waters and thick clouds as His sukkah. Job 36:29 uses the same image for the spreading of God's storm-canopy. Spanish 'su pabellón' and English 'his pavilion' highlight the royal, protective overtone.
