Sisera — Canaanite commander under King Jabin of Hazor, defeated by Deborah and Barak; also a family name
Primarily the name of the Canaanite military commander who led the forces of King Jabin of Hazor against Israel and was defeated through the combined agency of Deborah, Barak, and Jael (Judg 4-5). His nine hundred iron chariots symbolize overwhelming military power broken by divine intervention. Deborah's victory song in Judges 5 memorializes the scene of Sisera's mother waiting vainly for his return — one of the most vivid dramatic ironies in biblical poetry. A secondary Sisera appears as an ancestor of temple servants returning from exile (Ezra 2:53; Neh 7:55).

Senses
1. Sisera (personal name) The personal name of two distinct figures: primarily the Canaanite general under King Jabin defeated by Deborah and Barak at the Wadi Kishon (Judg 4:2-22; 5:20-30), killed by Jael with a tent peg, and recalled in later tradition (1 Sam 12:9; Ps 83:10); secondarily, the ancestor of a family of returning exiles (Ezra 2:53; Neh 7:55). The name may be of Hittite origin. Translations consistently transliterate as Sisera/Sísara across languages. 21×
