Neriah (Neriyah/Neriyahu), father of Baruch the scribe and Seraiah; a Judahite from the time of Jeremiah.
The personal name meaning 'lamp of Yah' or 'Yahweh is my light,' borne by the father of two important figures in the book of Jeremiah: Baruch the scribe (Jer 32:12; 36:4, 8, 32) and Seraiah the quartermaster (Jer 51:59). The name appears in both its longer form Neriyahu (with the theophoric -yahu suffix, Jer 36:14, 32; 43:6; 45:1) and the shorter Neriyah (Jer 32:12, 16; 36:4, 8; 43:3). Baruch ben Neriah served as Jeremiah's faithful secretary, reading the prophetic scroll publicly and preserving the prophet's oracles for posterity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The proper name Neriah/Neriyahu, meaning 'lamp of Yahweh,' identifying the father of Baruch the scribe and Seraiah. He is consistently identified as 'Neriah/Neriyahu' in patronymic formulae ('Baruch son of Neriah') throughout Jeremiah's narrative. The longer theophoric form Neriyahu (Jer 36:14; 43:6; 45:1) alternates freely with the shorter Neriyah (Jer 32:12; 36:4), as is common with -yahu/-yah names. Spanish 'Nerías,' French 'Néria,' and German 'Nerija' all reflect slightly different transliteration conventions of the same Hebrew name. 10×
