Nophah (place name, possibly textual corruption for Nobah)
Numbers 21:30 contains this place name in a victory song fragment that is textually difficult throughout the verse. The name appears nowhere else, leading many scholars to suspect corruption—perhaps originally 'Nobah' (a known location) or a verb form ('we destroyed'). The Septuagint read it as a verb, suggesting ancient translators also found the name puzzling. Victory songs often listed conquered cities as trophies; if Nophah is authentic, it was a Moabite or Amorite settlement destroyed in Israel's Transjordanian campaigns. Textual uncertainty hasn't obscured the passage's triumphant tone.

Senses
1. sense 1 This proper noun in Numbers 21:30 is lexically and textually problematic. Spanish 'Nofa' preserves it toponymically, but Septuagint ('they set on fire') treated it as a verb. BDB notes it may be confused with Nobah (Numbers 32:42) or may represent a Pual perfect verb ('it was destroyed'). The consonantal text (NPH) could support either reading. If a place, it joined Heshbon, Dibon, and Medeba in the roster of conquered Transjordanian towns.
