Appearing in two variant forms -- Noph and Moph -- it figures prominently in prophetic denunciations of Egypt. Jeremiah 2:16 warns that 'the sons of Noph' have broken Israel's crown, while Jeremiah 44:1 and 46:14,19 address Jewish refugees who settled there. Isaiah 19:13 declares its princes deceived, and Ezekiel 30:13 pronounces that God will destroy its idols. The Greek Septuagint renders it Memphis, preserving the Egyptian Mn-nfr ('enduring beauty').
