I ascend, go up
Psalm 139:8 asks the rhetorical question: 'If I ascend to heaven, you are there.' This verb is an Aramaic loanword (salaq) replacing the expected Hebrew alah. Why use an Aramaic verb in a Hebrew psalm? Perhaps for poetic variation, or the term entered colloquial Hebrew speech by the Persian period when this psalm was likely composed. The meaning is clear—vertical movement upward, climbing the heights of heaven. Yet even cosmic altitude cannot distance one from God's presence. The psalmist's point isn't geography but inescapability: no dimension, height or depth, excludes divine presence.

1. sense 1 — This Qal imperfect first person in Psalm 139:8 borrows Aramaic vocabulary into Hebrew poetry. Spanish 'subo' (I ascend) and French 'monter' straightforwardly render the upward motion. The verb appears nowhere else in biblical Hebrew, making this a clear Aramaism. The form (with assimilated consonant) shows Hebrew phonological adaptation of the Aramaic root. Conceptually, it pairs with Sheol in the next line: height versus depth, both equally within God's reach. 1×
