despised, contemptible (thing or person)
This adjective appears in 1 Samuel 15:9 describing what Saul and his army refused to destroy after defeating the Amalekites: 'everything despised and worthless.' The command was total destruction (herem), but human calculation crept in—why waste good livestock? The 'despised' things were scrawny animals, weak stock, things with no market value. Yet Saul's selective obedience revealed the heart issue: he would obey when it cost him nothing. The vocabulary of contempt (from bazah, to despise) becomes ironic since Saul's own disregard for clear commands would lead to his rejection as king.

1. sense 1 — In 1 Samuel 15:9, this passive participle describes animals deemed worthless and therefore suitable for destruction. Spanish 'despreciada' and French 'méprisé' capture the valuation sense—judged to have no worth. The irony runs deep: Saul destroyed what seemed valueless but kept what seemed valuable, inverting God's command. His contempt for weak animals paralleled his contempt for absolute obedience, a substitution of human economics for divine instruction. 1×
