Nun (also spelled Non in 1 Chr 7:27) is a proper masculine name whose sole narrative function is to identify Joshua through the patronymic bin-Nun. All 30 occurrences follow the same formula — 'Joshua son of Nun' — from his first appearance as Moses' young aide (Exod 33:11) through his commissioning as successor (Num 27:18), his leadership of the conquest (Josh 1:1), and retrospective references (Judg 2:8; Neh 8:17). Nothing else is recorded about Nun himself: no deeds, no speeches, no genealogical narrative beyond a single Ephraimite lineage in 1 Chronicles 7:25-27. The Septuagint renders the name as Naue (from a scribal error for Naun), while every modern language preserves the Hebrew form virtually unchanged.
