Mattan, a personal name meaning 'gift' borne by a Baal priest and a Judean father
This name appears for two different individuals in the Hebrew Bible. One Mattan was the priest of Baal in Jerusalem during Queen Athaliah's reign, killed when Jehoiada led the counter-revolution and destroyed the Baal temple (2 Kgs 11, 2 Chr 23). The other was the father of Shephatiah, one of the officials who opposed Jeremiah and threw him into a cistern (Jer 38). The name means 'gift,' from the same root as the common word for 'gift' (mattan).
