Sweet, sweetness — pleasant to the taste; of honey, God's words, pleasant speech, and the joy of life
The adjective and substantive מָתוֹק (matoq) describes what is sweet to the taste or metaphorically pleasant. Samson's riddle turns on the paradox: 'Out of the strong came something sweet' — answered by honey (Judg 14:14, 18). The psalmist declares God's ordinances sweeter than honey (Ps 19:10). Proverbs calls pleasant words 'sweet to the soul and healing to the bones' (Prov 16:24), while Ecclesiastes observes that a laborer's sleep is sweet (Eccl 5:12). Isaiah warns against calling 'sweet bitter and bitter sweet' (Isa 5:20). Spanish 'dulce' conveys both the sensory and figurative dimensions.
