Merari — third son of Levi; ancestor of the Merarite Levitical clan serving in tabernacle and temple
The proper name of the youngest of Levi's three sons (Gen 46:11; Exod 6:16), whose descendants formed one of the three major Levitical divisions. The Merarites were assigned the heavier structural components of the tabernacle — frames, crossbars, posts, and bases (Num 3:36-37) — and received twelve cities including four cities of refuge (Josh 21:7, 34-40). The name possibly derives from the root m-r-r, 'to be bitter,' though its etymology remains debated. All 39 occurrences cluster in priestly genealogies and service rosters from the Pentateuch through Chronicles and Ezra.

Senses
1. Merari (proper name) The personal name Merari, Levi's third son and eponymous ancestor of the Merarite clan of Levites. Every occurrence appears in genealogical or cultic-service contexts: the Pentateuchal census lists (Num 3-4, 26), the Levitical city allocations (Josh 21), and the Chronicler's temple rosters (1 Chr 6, 15, 23-24). Translations uniformly transliterate — 'Merari' in English, Spanish, German; 'Mérari' in French — reflecting its status as a stable proper noun. 39×
