Miriam — prophetess and sister of Moses and Aaron; also a Judahite man in 1 Chronicles 4:17
The name Miriam (מִרְיָם) belongs first and foremost to the sister of Moses and Aaron, one of the most prominent women in the Torah. She leads the women in song after the Sea crossing (Exod 15:20–21), challenges Moses' unique prophetic authority alongside Aaron (Num 12), and dies at Kadesh (Num 20:1). Deuteronomy 24:9 recalls her punishment with skin disease as a warning, and Micah 6:4 names her alongside Moses and Aaron as one of the three leaders God sent before Israel — a striking canonical honor. The Septuagint renders her name as Μαριαμ, the form that would later become 'Mary' in the New Testament tradition. A single male Judahite also bears the name (1 Chr 4:17).

Senses
1. Miriam (proper name) The feminine proper name Miriam (מִרְיָם), primarily identifying the prophetess and sister of Moses and Aaron. She appears leading worship after the Exodus (Exod 15:20–21), contesting Moses' authority (Num 12:1–15), dying at Kadesh (Num 20:1), and honored in Micah 6:4 as one of Israel's three founding leaders. The Septuagint's Μαριαμ became the source of 'Mary' in later tradition. Multilingual evidence shows remarkable consistency: Miriam (English, Spanish, French) and Mirjam (German). A secondary reference in 1 Chronicles 4:17 applies the name to a Judahite male, likely reflecting a textual or genealogical anomaly. 15×
