Merib-Baal, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, also called Mephibosheth
This name appears in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles for Jonathan's son, who is better known in 2 Samuel as Mephibosheth. The dual naming reflects ancient scribal practice of replacing the element 'Baal' with 'bosheth' (shame) in later texts to avoid pronouncing the Canaanite deity's name. Merib-Baal means 'Baal is advocate' or possibly 'hero of Baal.' The name appears three times in the Chronicles genealogy, identifying the same individual who was crippled as a child and later showed kindness by David for Jonathan's sake.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Merib-Baal, the birth name of Jonathan's son, later called Mephibosheth. First Chronicles 8:34 lists him twice in the genealogy: 'the son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal, and Merib-Baal fathered Micah.' The variant appears again in 9:40. This is the same person shown kindness by David in 2 Samuel (there called Mephibosheth), who was five when his nurse dropped him fleeing news of Saul's death. The LXX Μεριβααλ preserves the original form before 'Baal' was replaced with 'bosheth.' 3×
