Maacathite — a gentillic adjective denoting someone from the Aramean territory of Maacah
A gentillic (demonymic) adjective identifying a person as a native or inhabitant of Maacah, a small Aramean kingdom at the foot of Mount Hermon near the Golan. In its collective use, it describes the unconquered Maacathite population that remained within Israel's borders (Deut 3:14; Josh 12:5; 13:11, 13). It also identifies specific individuals: one of David's warriors (2 Sam 23:34), Eshtemoa in the Judahite genealogy (1 Chr 4:19), and Jaazaniah who joined Gedaliah after Jerusalem's fall (2 Kgs 25:23; Jer 40:8).
Senses
1. Maacathite (gentillic demonym) — The gentillic adjective 'Maacathite,' derived from the territory of Maacah (מַעֲכָה), an Aramean region near the base of Mount Hermon. Used collectively with the definite article הַמַּעֲכָתִי to designate the Maacathite population that Israel did not dispossess (Deut 3:14; Josh 12:5; 13:11, 13), and individually to identify specific persons such as one of David's warriors (2 Sam 23:34) and Jaazaniah in the post-exilic period (2 Kgs 25:23). Spanish 'maacateo/maacatita,' French 'Maacathite,' and English 'Maacathite' all reflect a straightforward transliteration of the Hebrew gentillic. 8×
