1. smith, locksmith — A craftsman who works metal; smith, locksmith. Used collectively of the skilled artisans deported from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar along with the charash (craftsmen): 'all the craftsmen and the smiths' (kol-hecharash wehammasger, 2 Kgs 24:14, 16; Jer 24:1; 29:2). The term appears in the stereotyped phrase pairing charash and masger for the artisan class whose removal crippled Judah's military capability. 4×
