smith, locksmith; dungeon, prison
2. dungeon, prison A place of confinement; dungeon, prison (from the root meaning 'to shut, close'). Used in Ps 142:7 'bring my soul out of prison' (mimmasger) and Isa 42:7 'to bring out prisoners from the dungeon' (mimmasger), and Isa 24:22 where captives are 'shut up in a prison' (masger). The noun derives from the same root s-g-r 'to close, shut' but here refers to the enclosed place rather than the metalworking trade.

Senses
1. smith, locksmith A craftsman who works metal; smith, locksmith. Used collectively of the skilled artisans deported from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar along with the charash (craftsmen): 'all the craftsmen and the smiths' (kol-hecharash wehammasger, 2 Kgs 24:14, 16; Jer 24:1; 29:2). The term appears in the stereotyped phrase pairing charash and masger for the artisan class whose removal crippled Judah's military capability.
