A type of rattle or percussion instrument, likely the Egyptian sistrum with metal frame and loose rings
This rare musical instrument appears only in 2 Samuel 6:5 during David's celebration bringing the ark to Jerusalem. The Egyptian sistrum was a handheld metal frame with loose bars and rings that produced a rhythmic jingling sound when shaken. The multilingual evidence (sistrums, sistros) reflects the Greek and Latin tradition identifying this as the sistrum, widely used in Egyptian worship but appearing here in Israelite celebration.
