Machir ('seller'); eldest son of Manasseh and ancestor of the Machirites, also a benefactor of David.

The primary figure is Machir son of Manasseh, the eldest grandson of Joseph, whose descendants conquered and settled in Gilead east of the Jordan (Num 32:39–40; Deut 3:15; Josh 13:31; 17:1). In the ancient Song of Deborah, 'Machir' stands poetically for the entire tribe of Manasseh (Judg 5:14). The second Machir, son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, sheltered Saul's grandson Mephibosheth and later provided supplies to David during Absalom's rebellion (2 Sam 9:4–5; 17:27).
