Mephaath — a Levitical city in the territory of Reuben, later in Moabite hands
Mephaath was a Levitical city assigned to the Merarite clan within the tribal allotment of Reuben (Josh 13:18; 21:37; 1 Chr 6:79). By the time of Jeremiah, the city had come under Moabite control and appears in the oracle against Moab (Jer 48:21). The Sabaean cognate place-name suggests ancient roots.
