V-Hifil-Prtcpl-ms  |  4× in 1 sense
pricking, painful (of thorns); malignant (of leprosy)
This Hiphil participle describes something that pricks or causes pain—whether literal thorns that jab, or malignant leprosy that spreads destructively. Ezekiel uses it of a 'pricking brier' that will no longer torment Israel from among the hostile nations surrounding them. The priestly texts use it three times of 'malignant leprosy' in fabric or buildings, designating the aggressive, spreading form of the disease that required destruction rather than cleansing. The root suggests breaking open or irritating, capturing both the sharp pain of thorns and the destructive spread of disease.

Senses
1. sense 1 The participle appears in prophetic and priestly texts about painful affliction. Ezekiel promises that hostile neighbors will no longer be 'a pricking brier' to Israel (Ezek 28:24, parallel to 'a painful thorn'). The priestly leprosy regulations three times describe 'malignant' leprosy in garments or houses—when the disease proves 'malignant' after inspection, the infected item must be burned (Lev 13:51, 52; 14:44). The Samaritan Pentateuch reads a different root (mrr) in these verses, suggesting textual uncertainty. Spanish maligna (malignant) and que-punza (that pricks) track both senses, while French malin and German malignant focus on the disease aspect.
