1. blemish, defect — A physical defect, flaw, or blemish. Used predominantly in Levitical legislation to disqualify priests with bodily imperfections from approaching the altar (Lev 21:17-23) and to require unblemished sacrificial animals (Lev 22:20-25; Num 19:2; Deut 15:21; 17:1). Extended figuratively to moral spotlessness, as in the description of Absalom's flawless appearance (2 Sam 14:25) and the beloved in Song 4:7. Applied to moral fault in Prov 9:7 (the blemish one receives from rebuking a scoffer) and corporately to Israel's spiritual failing in Deut 32:5. Job 11:15 uses it with the preposition מִן to express freedom from blemish. 19×
