Leshem, ancient name of the city Dan
The ancient name of a city captured by the tribe of Dan and renamed after their ancestor. Joshua 19:47 records that the Danites went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, renamed it Dan. This is the same city elsewhere called Laish. The name appears twice in the same verse (Hebrew text), marking both the attack on Leshem and the renaming. This northern city became infamous as a center of alternative worship under Jeroboam.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A place name, the original designation of the northern city later called Dan. Appears in Joshua 19:47 (twice in the verse) in the account of Dan's conquest and renaming of the city. The name is a variant of Laish, the more common designation. Septuagint renders it 'Lacheis' or 'Lesem,' showing transliteration variation. The city's capture and renaming represent Dan's northern migration and territorial establishment, with lasting theological implications when it became a cult center. 2×
