Lachish -- a major fortified Canaanite and later Judean city in the Shephelah lowlands
One of the most strategically important cities in the Shephelah, guarding the approaches to Jerusalem from the coastal plain. Its Amorite king joined the coalition against Gibeon and fell to Joshua (Josh 10:3-35). Fortified by Rehoboam (2 Chr 11:9), Lachish served as Judah's second city. Sennacherib made it his base of operations against Hezekiah (2 Kgs 18:14, 17), and Micah charged it with being 'the beginning of sin to the daughter of Zion' (Mic 1:13). The Lachish Letters provide eyewitness testimony of the final days before Babylon's conquest (cf. Jer 34:7).
