Lachmas (place name; town in Judah's tribal allotment)
Lachmas was a town in Judah's territorial inheritance, listed in Joshua 15:40 among the Shephelah settlements. The site has been tentatively identified with El-lahm, about 13 miles west-northwest of Hebron. The Septuagint renders it as Μαχες or Λαμας, showing some textual variation. Some Hebrew manuscripts read "Lachman" instead. This was one of many small towns in Judah's lowland region, its precise location now uncertain but its inclusion in Scripture's geographical precision noteworthy.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Joshua 15:40 lists Lachmas among Judah's Shephelah towns. Spanish "Lajmás," French "Lachmas," and German "Lachmas" all preserve the Hebrew name with minor phonetic adaptation. This town appears in the detailed territorial descriptions that ground biblical narrative in real geography, even when the precise site can no longer be identified with certainty. 1×
