Prep-b | N-proper-fs  |  8× in 1 sense
Luz; the ancient Canaanite city renamed Bethel after Jacob's vision, and a second city built by a Hittite exile.
A place name identifying the Canaanite city where Jacob slept and dreamed of the heavenly ladder, afterward renaming it Bethel, 'house of God' (Gen 28:19; 35:6; 48:3). The name Luz appears in boundary descriptions of Ephraim and Benjamin (Josh 16:2; 18:13) and in the narrative of a man from the original Luz who built a new city of the same name in Hittite territory (Judg 1:26). The Septuagint renders it Louza. Spanish transliterates as Luz, while French and German preserve the same form, reflecting the name's transparency across languages.

Senses
1. Luz (Canaanite city, later Bethel) The Canaanite toponym for the city later called Bethel, and a second settlement founded by a refugee from the original. Jacob arrived at Luz, encountered God in a dream, and renamed it Bethel (Gen 28:19; confirmed in 35:6 and 48:3). In tribal boundary lists, Luz/Bethel marks the border between Ephraim and Benjamin (Josh 16:2; 18:13). Judges 1:23–26 records how a man from Luz, spared during the Israelite conquest, went into Hittite territory and built a new city called Luz. Spanish a-Luz and en-Luz, French Luz, and German Lus all preserve the ancient name with minimal adaptation.
