Lioness, great lion — a poetic term for the female or mature lion, used in prophecy and blessing
The noun לָבִיא (lavi) designates a lioness or, more broadly, a great lion in its prime, and belongs to the rich Hebrew vocabulary for lions (alongside אַרְיֵה, כְּפִיר, לַיִשׁ, שַׁחַל). It appears almost exclusively in elevated poetry and prophetic speech. Jacob blesses Judah as a lion's whelp who crouches like a lavi (Gen 49:9). Balaam compares Israel to a lavi that rises and does not lie down until it devours its prey (Num 23:24; 24:9). Moses likens Dan to a lion's whelp that leaps from Bashan (Deut 33:20). The prophets invoke the image for both judgment and terror (Isa 5:29; 30:6; Hos 13:8; Joel 1:6; Nah 2:12).

Senses
1. lioness (female lion) A lioness or great lion — a poetic/archaic term used in tribal blessings, prophetic oracles, and wisdom poetry to evoke fierce power, majesty, or dread. Jacob's blessing of Judah (Gen 49:9), Balaam's oracles over Israel (Num 23:24; 24:9), Moses' blessing on Dan or Gad (Deut 33:20), and prophetic imagery of judgment (Isa 5:29; 30:6; Hos 13:8; Joel 1:6; Nah 2:12) all employ this word. Wisdom literature uses it to depict the lion's den and hunting instinct (Job 4:11; 38:39). Spanish 'leona/león' and English 'lioness/great lion' both appear in translations. 11×
