Kephirah, a Hivite/Gibeonite city later assigned to Benjamin, modern Kefireh
Kephirah was one of the four Gibeonite cities that made a treaty with Joshua through deception, claiming to come from a far country when they actually lived nearby. After the conquest, it was assigned to the tribal territory of Benjamin. The city appears in post-exilic census lists, showing that returnees from exile resettled it. Modern scholars identify it with Kefireh, located in the hill country west of Jerusalem.

1. sense 1 — Kephirah appears in conquest and settlement accounts. Joshua discovered it was one of the four Gibeonite cities that had deceived him (Josh 9:17). It was assigned to Benjamin's inheritance (Josh 18:26). Census lists record its population after the exile: the men of Kephirah and Beeroth numbered 743 in the first return (Ezra 2:25), recorded as 621 in Nehemiah's parallel list (Neh 7:29). The Septuagint renders it Kepheira or similar Greek approximations. Spanish Quefira/Quefirá, French Kephirah/ha-Kephirah, and German Kephirah preserve phonetic equivalents, with some including the definite article marker (ha-). 4×
