Jeconiah (also Coniah, Jehoiachin), Judah's penultimate king, exiled to Babylon
This lemma represents one variant spelling (כָּנְיָהוּ) of the name more commonly rendered Jehoiachin or Jeconiah. The young king reigned only three months before Nebuchadnezzar deported him to Babylon in 597 BC. Jeremiah's prophecies employ the shortened form Coniah with wordplays—declaring even if he were a signet ring on God's hand, he would be torn off and given to Babylon.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Jeremiah uses the shortened form כָּנְיָהוּ (Coniah/Konyahu) three times in chapters 22, 37. In 22:24, 28, the prophet pronounces judgment using this contracted form, perhaps suggesting diminishment or rejection—stripping away the theophoric 'Yeho-' prefix that invoked YHWH's name. By 37:1, Jeconiah has been replaced by his uncle Zedekiah. Cross-linguistic renderings (Spanish Conías, French Conias) preserve the abbreviated form, signaling the prophetic rhetoric of a throne forfeited. 3×
