Este verbo en la conjugación Piel significa otorgar un título, cognomen o sobrenombre a alguien. Isaías lo emplea cuando Dios declara que ha «dado un título» a Ciro, llamándolo por nombre antes de que Ciro conociera a Dios. El término puede tener fuerza honorífica, al conferir un título de honor, o bien un sentido negativo de halagar con títulos inmerecidos. Elihú insiste en que no «dará títulos aduladores» a ningún hombre, rechazando la práctica servil de otorgar honoríficos a los indignos. Sentidos
1. Otorgar título — El Piel aparece en cuatro pasajes sobre nombrar y titular. Dios dice a Ciro: «Te he llamado por tu nombre, te he dado título de honor» aunque Ciro no conocía a Yahvé (Is 45:4). Isaías describe cómo el futuro converso «se dará a sí mismo el nombre de Israel» (Is 44:5), tomando el nombre de la alianza como sobrenombre propio.
