Kalev (Caleb) is a proper masculine name appearing 35 times, overwhelmingly designating Caleb son of Jephunneh, called 'the Kenizzite' (Num 32:12; Josh 14:6, 14). The name may relate to kelev ('dog'), possibly indicating a clan totem or a term of devoted service. Caleb's defining moment comes in Numbers 13-14: as one of the twelve spies, he and Joshua alone urged Israel to trust God and enter Canaan. For this faithfulness, God swore that Caleb would receive the land his feet had trodden (Num 14:24; Deut 1:36). Forty-five years later, the 85-year-old Caleb claimed his inheritance at Hebron, driving out the three sons of Anak (Josh 14:6-15; 15:13-14). His daughter Achsah, given in marriage to Othniel for capturing Debir, boldly asked for springs of water — a memorable vignette of inherited boldness (Josh 15:16-19; Judg 1:12-15).
