Jether (Yeter) — a proper name meaning 'abundance,' borne by several OT figures including Gideon's son and the father of Amasa.
Yeter (יֶתֶר, 'abundance, excellence') is a masculine proper name shared by at least five individuals in the Old Testament. The most prominent is Jether the Ishmaelite (also called Ithra), father of David's general Amasa (1 Kgs 2:5; 1 Chr 2:17). Another notable bearer is Gideon's firstborn son, too young to slay the Midianite kings (Judg 8:20). The name also appears for men of Judah (1 Chr 2:32; 4:17) and of Asher (1 Chr 7:38). Its meaning, rooted in the idea of surplus or preeminence, is transparent in Hebrew and connects to the related name Jethro (יִתְרוֹ).
