1. sleeping, asleep — Adjective יָשֵׁן meaning 'sleeping, asleep,' describing the state of being in sleep. Used of Saul sleeping in the encampment (1 Sam 26:7), soldiers sleeping around Saul (1 Sam 26:12 implied), Elijah's angelic visitor taunts the sleeping Baal (1 Kgs 18:27), the mother whose child was exchanged while sleeping (1 Kgs 3:20), the beloved in the Song 'I sleep but my heart is awake' (Song 5:2), the Lord who awakes 'like one sleeping' (Ps 78:65), Hosea's indictment of the baker who sleeps (Hos 7:6), and Daniel's prophecy of 'those sleeping in the dust' (Dan 12:2, Aramaic מִיְּשֵׁנֵי).
