Yishmael -- Ishmael ('God hears'); son of Abraham and Hagar, and several other biblical figures
Yishmael ('God hears,' from shama' + El) is a proper masculine name borne by several individuals in the Hebrew Bible. The most prominent is the son of Abraham by Hagar, whose 48 occurrences span the patriarchal narratives of Genesis. God names him before birth with an explanatory etymology: 'because YHWH has heard your affliction' (Gen 16:11). He is circumcised at thirteen (Gen 17:25), becomes the father of twelve princes (Gen 25:13-16), and dies at 137 years (Gen 25:17). A second notable Ishmael is the son of Nethaniah, the assassin of Gedaliah, governor of Judah after the fall of Jerusalem (Jer 40-41; 2 Kgs 25:23-25). Others include figures in Benjaminite genealogies (1 Chr 8:38), a Judahite official (2 Chr 19:11), a military captain (2 Chr 23:1), and a priest with a foreign wife (Ezra 10:22). Spanish Ismael, French Ismael, and German Ismael preserve the name uniformly.

Senses
1. Ishmael (proper name) The proper name Ishmael, meaning 'God hears,' applied to multiple individuals, chiefly Abraham's son through Hagar (Gen 16:11-15; 17:18-26; 25:9-17), whose birth narrative turns on the divine hearing of affliction, and the son of Nethaniah who assassinated Gedaliah (Jer 40:8-41:18; 2 Kgs 25:23-25). Smaller clusters designate Benjaminite, Judahite, and priestly figures (1 Chr 8:38; 2 Chr 19:11; Ezra 10:22). Spanish Ismael, French Ismael, and German Ismael confirm a single proper-name referent with no polysemy. 48×
